Why are the bad characters in wrestling called Heels?

I know the good characters in wrestling are called “faces” which is short for “babyfaces” but I’ve always wondered why bad characters are called “heels”. Where did the word come from and is it an abbreviation for something?

In old folklore a “heel” was someone who was like a hero, but whenever danger arose would “take heel” and run away, leaving the hero take face the villains on his own. Essentially it was someone who was not to be trusted.

Possibly the term “Heel” in wrestling is somehow derived from this in the sense that he is not the “good guy”.
