PTA Pagans?

For years I have been wrestling with the Pagan stereotypes. Since I found the label, I have used it, as it most closely defines me. But at the same time, it doesn’t define me at all. Like in every other social group, there are the normal ones, and the weirdos. That old beat-up car you see on its way to the metaphysical store, covered in “Blessed Be” bumper stickers…that’s not me. I have the minivan with the Celtic charm hanging from the rearview, kids strapped in the back that have never heard of a Sabbat. People have asked over the years what religion I am…depending on the situation I say “atheist” or “Pagan”…and I always fear the Look that comes if I say “Pagan.
Pagan pride is all well and good… but how do you get past not being able to tell your own mother the truth, because of the public misconception that we all run around naked and don’t pay our bills and use magic to make people fall in love with us?

Forgive me if this sounds harsh, but I am one of those “PTA Pagans”… and quite frankly, by hiding your choice of faith, you are engendering the exact stereotypes you complain about! If no one is willing to step up and say, “Yes, I am pagan, and a soccer mom, and I love my minivan!”, then what else does the public, including your mother, have to go on besides some freaky goth kids (who really are just fluffy bunnies in black clothing) and the odd ball hippie chick who thinks sandalwood incense makes the best perfume?!
I was raised in a very strict Catholic family – and, no my family doesn’t like my choice. But they don’t have to – I do. And they respect my decision, and a large part of it is because I don’t hide it like it’s something shameful. I live it, out loud, every day. My children celebrate Samhain, Yule, and Beltane with me. I live as, I hope, a good example of peace and stewardship of this Earth, and raise my children to think independently, ask questions, and not be ashamed of being different.
In over 10 years of practicing openly, I’ve had less then a handful of truly negative encounters. Most people give you a strange look because they don’t really know what pagan means. If you take the time to educate them, 99.9% of people really don’t care what you believe – and many people think it’s pretty darn cool, even if they would never choose it for themselves.
You are doing yourself, your children, and your mother no favors by hiding it. Why not step outside your comfort zone, and come out of the “broom closet”? If you truly feel that “pagan” is the right path for you, then you won’t feel ashamed to admit it, and take the wierd looks that come along with it – they are the ones with a problem, not you.
